Beekeeping is one of WCT’s flagship alternative livelihood projects. It provides safe, reliable income while strengthening ecosystem health in the Upper Mara.
Unlike river-based activities such as sand harvesting, beekeeping does not require daily exposure to high-risk wildlife zones. Instead, it incentivizes communities to protect forests, riverbanks, and natural vegetation, which are essential for healthy bee populations.
WCT supports groups through:
• Provision of modern beehives and protective equipment
• Training in hive management and honey harvesting
• Cooperative formation for collective marketing
• Market linkage to established honey processors
Beekeeping delivers both economic and ecological returns:
• Generates steady household income
• Encourages forest conservation and riverbank restoration
• Requires minimal land and startup capital
