For many women in the Upper Mara, income traditionally depended on river-adjacent activities that exposed them to hippo and crocodile attacks. WCT’s Climate-Smart Horticulture Program provides a safer, higher-value alternative.

The program supports irrigated vegetable production at household level ensuring both food security at home surplus for income.

WCT supports through:

• Establishment of demonstration plots for hands-on learning

• Training in vegetable production and management

• Access to irrigation infrastructure and quality inputs

• Marketing linkages

The focus is on high-demand, short period crops  that generate consistent market income.

By transitioning women from subsistence and high-risk activities into structured, irrigated production, the program reduces conflict exposure while increasing economic stability and coexistence.
